The Street Dogs of Kathmandu

The different attitudes and approaches towards street animals in one country versus another is a fascinating topic. In Thailand, street cats were everywhere, but I watched as men would bring bike loads of cat food to feed these strays in the streets. However, locals told me rumors that the street dogs were often carted off in the night and sold to Vietnam as food. Who knows if this is true. In Cambodia I would see some street cats, but animals in the streets were not common. In Nepal, the street dog was king. They were everywhere, roaming in packs, sleeping on sidewalks, in gutters, and in the street. Crossing the roads, they were extremely savvy, looking both ways and leapfrogging their way through traffic. In the mornings you would hear these warring tribes fighting, and many had wounds and mange. Yet I also met people who cared for these dogs, setting food out in the mornings for them. The street dogs of Nepal live rough lives, but are still cared after by many.
